There is enough inherent leakage with a string gasket that with repeated pushing and turning you can eventually seat the piston. O rings however seal more effectively and have much less resistance...

......never dawned on me as the fire piston that I have includes a string gasket and is easily forced to stay seated. thanks for the explanation.
